What Are Discount Real Estate Brokers and Discount Real Estate Agents?
Discount Real Estate Brokers and Discount Real Estate Agents are real estate licensees who are agreeable to discounting their listing commission to something lower than the rate commonly offered by real estate brokers within a geographic area.
Property sellers often find that there happens to be a common commission rate charged by real estate brokers within their geographic area, even though it is not legal for real estate brokers within a geographical area to set standard real estate commission rates.
(Note that commissions are approved by the brokerage’s Principal Broker. Many brokerages empower their Agents with the flexibility to offer discount real estate commissions.)

What Is the Difference between a Broker and an Agent?
Generally, and in most states, a Real Estate Broker is someone who has achieved the highest level of classification in real estate – having completed the highest levels of real estate education and being qualified to own and/or manage his/her own brokerage and supervise other agents.
Brokers who manage their own business and/or supervise other agents are often called Managing Brokers, Principal Brokers, Designated Brokers, Qualifying Brokers, or Brokers-In-Charge – depending on the state and their role within their organization.
Associate Brokers or Broker Associates are brokers who are qualified, through education and experience, to manage their own brokerage and supervise other agents. However, they instead choose to operate under another real estate broker.
A Real Estate Agent or Salesperson is a licensee at a lower level of classification in real estate. The Agent has typically achieved a lower level of real estate education and must be supervised by a Broker.
The classification process can become a little confusing depending on the state. For instance, in some states, real estate Agents, or Salespersons, are called Brokers.
